HRT… is it safe?
Whether reading a newspaper or an article online, you might see warnings about the dangers of hormone replacement therapy. Before suffering through another day of hot flashes, vaginal dryness, mood swings and low libido, get the facts. HRT can be very safe and for many women, dramatically change how they feel — for the better.
HRT (Hormone replacement therapy) isn’t for everyone.
HRT, for some women, can mean the difference between a renewed sense of physical, emotional and sexual well-being and just learning “to live with” feeling terrible.
Hormone imbalance strikes ALL WOMEN at some time in their lives. This can lead to poor sleep, weight gain, hot flashes and many other conditions that aren’t necessarily related to menopause. If you haven’t felt like yourself lately, your hormones could be to blame.
STEPS TO DECIDE ON HRT
1. Find the right Primary Care Facility.
Even if you have to end your relationship with your current Primary Care Facility, it’s important to partner with a Primary Care team that has a strong background in managing women’s health and who open-minded about HRT. If your current Primary Care Facility simply dismisses your symptoms and tells you it’s a sign of aging or, in other words… “deal with it” .. reconsider your relationship.
When choosing a Primary Care Facility, ask yourself the following questions:
- Does your Primary Care Facility seem to have a “learn to live with it” attitude?
- Does your Primary Care Facility listen to your concerns and symptoms and seem to want to help you manage them?
- Is your Primary Care Facility open to natural/bioidentical hormone replacement?
- Does your Primary Care Facility suggest tracking symptoms and reporting any problems?
If the answers to these questions make you uncomfortable… consider finding another Primary Care Facility. Menopause is not something you should have to “suffer through”… it’s merely a stage of life that leads to a new kind of well-being.
2. Take the hormone test
A simple blood test can tell you a lot about your hormone levels. This is and should be a prerequisite before starting HRT. As it will show if hormone replacement is needed.
3. Track your symptoms
Keep track of your symptoms to share with your Primary Care Facility. This is a great way to see how you are progressing. Combine this “diary” with follow up “lab draws” and you’ll be able to easily track your progress.
4. More is not better
When it comes to HRT, more is not better. Hormones are powerful chemicals that need to be administered and monitored closely. to eliminate or improve symptoms. Work closely with your Primary Care Facility to increase or decrease your dose based on your symptoms and post-HRT blood measurements.
