Why is Vitamin D Important?

Simply put Vitamin D can help you live longer. Lars Rejnmark, an associate professor at Aarhaus University in Denmark, states, “Except for stopping smoking, there are not many other known interventions that are capable (of) such a reduction in the risk of death.”

That fact alone should be enough to recognize the benefit to maintain proper levels. The benefits go on… Vitamin D , combined with calcium also protects older adults from osteoporosis. It is also needed for bone growth and bone remodeling. Without sufficient Vitamin D, bones can become thin, brittle, or misshapen. Vitamin D has other roles in the body, including modulation of cell growth, neuromuscular and immune function, and reduction of inflammation.

Vitamin D & Cancer

Recent studies and evidence show Vitamin D may help protect against cancer. In a recent study of the benefits of Vitamin D,  3,121 adults aged ≥50 years (96% men) underwent a colonoscopy with results that could not be ignored. The study found that 10% had at least one advanced cancerous lesion. Those with the highest vitamin D intakes (>645 IU/day) had a significantly lower risk of these lesions.

In another recent clinical trial that focused on bone health in 1,179 postmenopausal women, found that subjects supplemented daily with calcium (1,400–1,500 mg) and vitamin D3 (1,100 IU) had a significantly lower incidence of cancer over 4 years compared with women taking a placebo.
